Ontario Health Study participants are part of the nation-wide CanPath study (formerly the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project). A subset of OHS participants were invited to also take part in the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds (CAHHM) study, which explores the early causes cardiac and vascular disease in adults. CAHHM researchers looked at brain and carotid artery MRIs and two cognitive tests from 7,733 men and women, and found that small vessel disease characterizes much of the relationship between diabetes and vascular brain injury.
